I told you this was coming.
Back in 2024, I wrote an article about the eventual demise of Coda. I bring it up now not because they’re going out of business, or sunsetting the platform—don’t panic—all software eventually hits a wall of entropy. It becomes bloated, irrelevant, or just too slow to keep up with the speed of thought. I warned that unless we built our own exit ramps and backstops, we’d be at the mercy of their roadmap rather than our own.
I’m still partly right, partly premature about that article. While generative AI as prominent when I wrote it, what wasn’t so certain was the renaissance of the CLI and locally running applications such as Claude Code, Google Antigravity, Geni CLI, and even Superhuman Go. These are all binaries that run in your local environment, and they have much more power when coupled with generative AI than any cloud-based conversational AI tool.
The window of competent AI bound to specific products appears to be closing, but not the way you might think. It’s time to build the ramp, but not necessarily the “exit” ramp. I see it as more of an onramp from a highway to an autobahn.
Enter Chroma, my latest experimental framework that draws upon Coda MCP and agentic platforms to fortify a local-first philosophy. It’s an agent-native backstop designed to both defend and accentuate your Coda investment by doing the one thing the cloud cannot do: move fast and integrate locally.

But, ten million paying Notion customers can’t all be wrong at the same time. I’m skeptical of Francesco’s claims, but I’m also not under any illusion - I am following in his footsteps to a point.
This video is relevant because it validates the “local-first agentic” approach by showing how a leading productivity expert is replacing cloud-based tools like Notion with local agentic workflows (Claude Cowork), mirroring the Chroma strategy.

Why? Because static pages are dead. He’s moving to a model where agents don’t just read your wiki; they work inside it. He’s using agents to plan, script, and track his entire channel by giving them direct access to his local file system. Chroma is that exact same architectural shift, but applied to your Coda ecosystem. It is the “Cowork” layer for your enterprise documents and data.
The Latency Lie: MCP is Still Remote
We’ve convinced ourselves that “real-time” collaboration is worth the cost of latency. In many cases, it isn’t. When I’m working, I don’t need a spinning circle; I need my data now. I need to sustain a pace that yields high output with deep context and zero switching costs.
Coda’s new Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a brilliant step forward, but let’s be honest about the physics. It’s still a remote pipe.

Why Agents Love the Taste of Chroma
I previously wrote that my “productivity sandwich” relies on ambient context. But agents like Claude Code or standard LLMs choke on the latency of cloud APIs. They can’t “think” if they have to wait two seconds for every memory retrieval. In complex workflows, the real-world state can change while the agent is waiting.

Conclusion
