Timecode Calculator

Hey Community! I hope to start sharing a few of my favorite tools/docs. They’re never perfect, so I tend not to. But I’m quite proud of some of the solutions I’ve come up with, and I’d like to share what has been useful for me either at work or in life.

First up, a Timecode Calculator

This is intended for anyone who works in video/TV/film post production. It’s a typical calculator with the added bonus that it can handle duration values and formatted timecode (a representation of duration in hours, minutes, seconds, frames, hh:mm:ss:ff).

Here’s a clip of the doc in action.

One of my favorite things about this doc is the how the framerate selection operates. With the lock button that then allows you to cycle through the available rates. I also like the Paper Tape.

The larger goal of this calculator is to be able to use it with other related tools. I imagine a doc that logs dailies and cuts, being able to select durations to send through the calculator. For example, quickly calculate the difference in length between an Editor’s Cut or a Director’s Cut. Or determine the length of a cut with certain scenes removed.

Btw, I didn’t get into the weeds of drop-frame timecodes because it’s not something I typically deal with.

As I said at the top, I know you’ll encounter some bugs or less-than-perfect behavior. It’s at a point where I should rebuild it from scratch. But who has the time! If you do, please be my guest! Hope you find something in here handy or worthwhile.

Wow !! That’s great (clean) work ! I wasn’t able to add the rows like your video, but the calculations are what are most important for my use. Now if we could only have Coda recognize frames in table calculations#summaries that would be awesome, but honestly this will do in a pinch ! Actually, come to think of it I suppose I could just put something together with a canvas control  Thank you for the inspo !!

Thanks, Lisa! Glad you got some inspo! I’d love to see what you come up with.

Looking at the related topics, I see we’re both advocates for the hh:mm:ss:ff format in Coda. Here was my idea from wayyy back. As great as it would be, I’ve accepted that there isn’t much demand for this in the Coda user base at large. That said, if some savvy person could build some kind of pack for this, that would be sweet.

I, for one, often get stuck in “this probably won’t be of interest to anyone but me”, so it takes an effort to make the leap and share! Thanks for doing so, @Phil_Hamilton!

What a thought-out way to visualize the calculator to your audience, complete with logging, paper trail and mobile layout! Love it!
