I’m trying to sort by month in month order ie jan feb mar etc
But it’s sorting in alphabetical order
I created a reverse lookup that displays as a date but it’s not allowing me to sort by date (still doing alphabetical) even though I converted the text to a date format in the table it’s looking up from…
I would maybe add another column in your start month table where I would put their respective numbers (Jan = 1 up to Dec=12) and insert this related column in the table you want to sort, then sort it by month number.

Great question, I recognize your point, as I have been wondering too, when I had less experience.
One approach, and for sure not the only one is shown in the embedded sample, and when you check it, it will become clear what benefit you can get.
