Collapsible List not working

This is my first time testing out Coda as I am looking for a Notion alternative, so I am trying to re-create one of my Notion pages. And I am already stuck, that was quick! The collapsible list doesnt seem to open to let me put information inside of it, I had to do some massive work-arounds that taking a long time, just to get anything inside.

Here is a video example of what the issue: Struggling with Coda's Collapsible Lists | Loom

Am I using it incorrectly?

Hi Maia,

Welcome to Coda and the community!

Hopefully this helps:

There are many subtle and not-so-subtle differences between Coda and Notion. However, you will find that there are quite large numbers of people in the community who used to use Notion. I encourage you to keep trying.

I found Notion first, then Coda, and used the two together for a while. That lasted until one day I wanted to do something a little bit more serious. I tried in Notion first, quickly ran into trouble. If I remember it was using boolean logic while filtering a table. Notion just couldn’t do it. I then tried it in Coda, and it was a breeze.

You will find that the consensus is that Notion is for more simple things where you want it to look nice. Coda is for serious docs, especially once you start getting into using and maybe even making packs.

Regards
Piet

Hey Maia,
Welcome to Coda!

I agree it’s a little finicky but there is a logic to it – the collapsing is based on the text size

That’s why it’s only collapsing to your next header of the same size

You can also change text size with hashtag prefixes (markdown)

  • # Title → h1
  • ## Title → h2
  • ### Title → h3

Does this mean that I have to change the title to a Header in order to open it? Also, my main is issue that im not able to grab large sections of text and place them inside of the collapsible list.

Thanks for the video! I’m not sure it addressed my issue though. My main is issue that im not able to grab large sections of text and place them inside of a collapsible list. It looks your video was just showing me how to create them.

You need to put the new text UNDER the heading (Collapsed starting line), with one tab indent to the right.

Oh you were using the collapsible list, yeah that works a little different for some reason, that’s based on the indents like Piet mentioned!

To use the non-list version you make the header first, then collapse it
