Feature Request: Enhanced Document Styling and Formatting Capabilities!

Hello Coda Community,

In our company, we frequently prepare documents using Word, PDFs, and PowerPoint with specific templates that include custom graphics, icons, illustrations, fonts, and colours. These elements are crucial for maintaining brand consistency and ensuring our documents are both visually appealing and professional.

However, when transitioning to Coda, we’ve encountered some limitations in replicating the level of customisation we’re used to. To fully leverage Coda as a versatile tool for all our documentation needs, we would love to see enhanced capabilities in the following areas:

  1. Custom Styles and Fonts: The ability to apply a wide range of fonts and create custom text styles, similar to what is possible in Word.
  2. Advanced Colour Options: More control over text and background colours, including custom colour palettes.
  3. Graphic Elements: Enhanced support for adding and positioning images, illustrations, and icons within the document.
  4. Tables for Data Display: The ability to create non-database tables that allow us to display data in a more structured and visually comprehensive way, akin to what’s possible in Word or PowerPoint.

We believe these features would significantly improve the versatility of Coda, allowing users to create documents that are not only functional but also visually aligned with our branding needs. Additionally, these enhancements would be immensely beneficial for building Coda sites that require a high level of design customisation and aesthetic consistency.

Hi. Not sure if this option would check off your requirements (definitely wish there was a native option) but there is a software called Documint, which allows you to quickly and easily create professional PDF documents and templates from Coda data. See example below.

@Scott_Collier-Weir created a great tutorial on using both Documint and Coda (https://youtu.be/omPhjtZKCPg?si=TRKXO0aNkj0yz8Tq).

Hi @Coda_Solutions ,
Yes, I’m familiar with Documint and Scott (who, by the way, is an incredible Coda maker).

However, as I mentioned in my post, it’s crucial for businesses to have the ability to customise their own tools, internal documents, sales propositions, or even websites. At the moment, I believe the only major limitation within Coda is the level of customisation in terms of graphics.

That said, the ability to build tools and functionalities, especially with Coda docs and custom packs, is a game changer.

Yes, these thoughts would be great, I have added my vote.

For topic 4, have you seen /grid? It allows grids, as opposed to tables. Unfortunately, the formatting options are limited.

Voted for this. I would also like to see more options for list numbering: headings, custom numbering.

Hi @Piet_Strydom ,
Thanks for letting me know! I wasn’t aware there was a grid—fantastic! Even though the formatting options are limited, it’s still a great feature!

Hi @Nurlan_A ,
Yes, I completely agree! Thanks for your vote! It would be great to have more options for headings and custom numbering.

If we exclude any AI-based features it’s been comparatively quiet on the release front. I really hope we get a nice release that hits on some of these items and other “quality of life” improvements – hands down my favorite kinds of releases.

I completely agree with your points! Customization is key for maintaining brand consistency and ensuring our documents look professional. The ability to apply custom styles, fonts, and colors in Coda would be a fantastic enhancement. Enhanced support for graphic elements and advanced table options would also make a huge difference in creating visually appealing and structured documents.

These features would definitely expand Coda’s capabilities and align it more closely with the tools we’re used to, like Word and PowerPoint. I’m all in favor of upvoting this request!

Thanks for bringing this up and outlining the needed improvements so clearly.
