I have a column that is a date column and when used in a formula, Coda reads it as an error since it is a text column.

It is really hard to trouble shoot if you don’t share a dummy doc.
But, did you try the formula. Technically, you should retrieve your date from a date column, but if the date in a text column is properly formatted, the button will work. If there is text in your date column, the button will fail only for the rows that Coda can’t convert the the text to a date.
In my example (see screenprint) the button in the first line works (even though the code says there is something wrong) and the button on the second line fails:
