Colors in timeline and calendars without conditional formatting

I’d love to be able to directly apply colors to items without having to use conditional formatting. Sometimes I just want something to be visually pleasing without identifying a pattern, etc.

I’m interested in creating a calendar where adding an event conditionally gives it a different color. Think a Time Off calendar where Work From Home is orange and PTO is red. https://help.coda.io/organizing-your-doc/layout-options/how-to-build-a-calendar-view has a brief statement in the FAQ, but I can’t figure out how to accomplish this.

Coda calendar color formatting

I am trying to set up a “marketing activities” calendar and just having trouble with formatting. How can I get my calendar to show the title of the activity while using the color that I choose as its “type”. Anyone know how I can format this?
