First part I know how to do, that’s an easy one.
But I have no clue how to hack into the doc to check if data that should be secure is accessible or not…
And about the “if you want to know, find about by yourself”, I’ll go and do that, then.

On the record: Coda is not meant to be secure. With publishing (in edit mode) you can actually come a long way in seriously hiding data, BUT keep in mind that Coda loads the entire doc (always!). This is not the place to get into how to “hack into the doc” and it really is not that simple to retrieve data from the source. As long as you now that the data is there, you can make the right choices as to what to publish and to whom you grant access or share the URL of your published doc.
a couple of settings can be really important:
There is a lot of information about this topic in this community, but without hands-on experience it is hard to get the full picture.
This is a matter of some concern to me, so I appreciate your questions. Recently, one of the Coda people commented that they come from the world of spreadsheets, where if someone could see the spreadsheet, they could see all of it Restricting parts of a spreasheet is not in their DNA, yet…hence restricting views and table gets complicated. Restricting access to rows and columns in a table is proving challenging, I believe. But they are aware of the problem, and working on it, I believe.
Actually, there are already quite a few things you can do to hide rows or tables, to restrict editing, etc. One of my docs has about 20 editors, but there are many tables they can see but not edit, and many more tables they don’t see.
It is just not very secure. In normal doc mode, the search option (top left) can’t be hidden and it allows people who use the proper search terms to find just about anything.
For example, you can hide (or filter) a salary table, but searching on an employees name will bring a user eventually to a row with salary information.
Coda is working on ways to make your doc a lot more secure, among other things by syncing pages to other docs without revealing or submitting all underlying source data - but we are not quite there yet.
In this post you can see the current status for more secure sharing of data: Launched: Sync page access control (view-only)
Thanks! I agree completely. My biggest concern is with that search bar, which can show you things you didn’t even know were there. But I agree progress is being made, and Coda is so powerful in so many ways that it will be worth the wait for the security enhancements.
