I propose the following “Inline” group layout for the table view in addition to “Left” and “Top”:
It trades horizontal for vertical space and might be suited for long group names and nested groups.

I appreciate this suggestion is two years old, but I would also really like this!
I believe in Excel, this is called “compact” rather than “inline”, but either way it’d be a great addition.
Here’s a mockup of how it could look in Coda’s style:
Essentially this would just be a card-style group that could be used to subdivide a table into clearly separated sections.
This grouping layout would be really useful. To be able to group left and then have secondary vertical grouping under headings would really fix some layout issues for me.
@BenLee Do you foresee a feature like this being released? I have a large number of use cases where this would make project management and more advanced grouping and reporting possible.
Just posting to reiterate how incredibly useful this grouping style would be.
I would greatly prefer to display this as grouped rows, where the thing I’m grouping by is a long string of text:
This “inline” group is a great idea!
It’s a good alternative to left view, which can take up so much space.
But also as you say @Adam_Clewley, it can be in addition to left view, giving the view a 3rd dimension.
Another alternative is to have the inline groups look like headings, and if you use several inline group in a view, the headings will show in different sizes by level.
How can we lift this suggestion up higher?
