Calculating Metrics Across Tasks and Project Parts

I’ve got a specific question that I don’t know how to ask more generally, so apologies for all the details.

I’m editing a book by chapter. I do three passes on each chapter: developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading. I am paid a flat fee per chapter.

In a table I input the word count for each chapter (which changes at the different passes) and then calculate the number of pages per chapter (word count/250). I input the time spent on each edit in hours (e.g., 5.25) and calculate my editing speed per page (pages/hours).

I want to be able to:

  • calculate the total book pages edited per hour by task (dev edit, copyedit, proof) and by chapter
  • calculate my hourly fee per chapter (total hours spent on chapter/chapter fee)

I could do it in Excel, but I can’t get out of the “cell” mindset to do it in Coda.

I’ve tried setting up a table for each chapter, detailing the data per editing stage. I’ve tried setting up a table for each editing stage, detailing the data per chapter. I cannot figure out how to set up the formulas either way. And I’m not sure how I would combine the two tables into one and set up the formulas.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Hi @Erin_Brenner,
firstly, welcome to Coda Community!

I made a sample to see if I correctly understood your needs:

Please, let me know if this is close to what intended.

I tried to condense some of the basic features to get used to Coda.
Essentially, for each entry in the Activities table, you just have to provide the basic input data you described.

As you can see, the hourly fee per chapter is an average (per book), but can be easily extended to have a full per chapter fee (if needed).

Let us know if this is the way.

Cheers!
