Not sure why the request is failing. Getting 400 but it’s not saying much. Anyone else experience this when trying to add a viewer permission via API on a doc?
{ “statusCode”: 400, “statusMessage”: “Bad Request”, “message”: “Failed to share the doc.” }
Hey @CodaLiesAndCheats - Welcome to the Coda community! I’m not aware of a system-wide issue with that endpoint. Can you share the payload you are using? Are the email addresses valid? Can you share that same doc in the UI?
I just tried through the web UI actually. Got a cross-domain sharing prohibited message. How do I enable it?
I’m trying to give course participants access to course resources in a view-only way. I thought a direct share would be the best way, but I’m running into issues.
I’m not 100% sure, but I think that sharing control may only be available to Enterprise admins. You may be the admin in your workspace, but there could be an Org-level admin within your company that controls that setting.
That’s pretty shitty behavior. All over the marketing site, it’s “pay for doc-makers” and “invite viewers, always free.” Then you find out there’s a basic platform limitation that’s been hidden from you.
And that it’s engineered to dupe you into a costly upgrade.
Would’ve been nice to learn this before I spent hours building out my doc, wouldn’t it have?
Looping in the orchestrator of this disgusting, duplicitous shakedown. @shishir
Okay, chill down… no need for such language as things are documented that some features are are accesible only when on Enterprise plan.
Fee free to use this pack to change permissions (add/remove, update) for users in the docs you own (I guess that as youa re workspace admin… you should be in all docs as owner).
This isn’t documented anywhere except that one page posted before. Nowhere in the marketing materials. Hell, the API error message isn’t even acceptably descriptive. It’s all glossed over while they shout “invite guests and readonly users” from the rooftops.
… for $75/mo.
After you’ve spent hours in the platform and are ready to ship.
It’s a lie, and shit behavior. No other way to say it.
It’s not even mentioned in the documentation for the exact API endpoints that concern it.
How can this be sidestepped with a pack when it’s a limitation in their invite system? @shishir went out of the way to add “functionality” to castrate the platform and screw new users.
sorry to hear that youve spent hours on coda and it has not met your expectations.
in efforts to understand where you’re coming from…is this the “marketing site” you are referring to ? Pricing, pricing plans - Coda
and where you’ve said “invite viewers, always free.”, its in reference to this?
to be frank, from my understanding what is stated is what is promised. One can invite users and it is free to do so.
Its just the “how” that is not explicitly stated.
I assume you’re a dev/technical person and that you’ve interpreted it as via API etc ?
Please note for common folk (non techie) and overall general public, it just means you can manually do it (from inside the product/Web UI i.e. Share option in a coda doc).
I feel that maybe running into the bug described above has compounded on the validity of said statement.
In terms of their API access- i’ve always thought and seen that it is general industry standard/practice for SaaS to charge for access to their more niche/specialized APIs.
Which is fair enough. Companies need to be able to generate income somewhere so they can maintain and develop their software. And if you dont agree with that, thats why open-source software also exists.
Its important to keep in mind, Coda has to keep their lights on as well. They have their team to feed and a billion dollar loan to pay back
I think there was a misunderstanding. I had wrongly assumed the failure to share your doc was because of an admin setting that prohibits sharing, and pointed you to the docs about that admin setting.
As @Melanie_Teh pointed out, there is another more likely cause, that your account got automatically flagged in our spam-prevention system since it’s a new account. Resolving that issue involves contacting support, who can remove that flag from your account.
Sharing docs is not an admin feature and doesn’t require an upgrade, and I’m sorry if I gave you that impression.
In case its not the bug as stated above - another scenario could be depending on the workspace’s pricing tier/plan. If on the Free plan … there is a doc size limit of 50 objects and 1000 rows.
I can appreciate you are dissapointed to discover this limitation of the product.
But I do NOT appreciate your use of foul language to express that dissapointment.
People here are friendly and supportive and have done their best to help you with your problem.
Please respect this and refrain from using unacceptable language and criticising the people who are trying to help.
Maintaining a polite and helpful tone is essential for encouraging users to feel safe asking questions and proposing solutions without fear of being insulted or disrespected.
It may seem a trivial point - but I have seen far too many online forums go downhill rapidly when minor infractions of the code of conduct go unchallenged.
As for having to pay for the features needed to produce useful workflows within your organisation?
Thats how products work - the benefits that Coda provides to commercial organisations are considered well worth the price in most cases.
If you do not agree, then please engage in a civil and rational discussion on the topic - without foul or disrespectful language.
